The story of cultures colliding told through Maori Art in New Zealand parliament

Matire-White-Ornate-Frame-maori-portrait-painting-sofia-minson-new-zealand-artworkThis portrait of my Ngati Porou great-grandmother “Matire Te Horowai” wearing her traditional victorian dress and moko kauae (chin tattoo) will speak volumes about our cultural history in the heart of New Zealand’s capital.

Two of my artworks are on show at Bowen House Parliament Building in Wellington – with The Real Opotiki Exhibition from 8 Feb – 31 Mar 2017.

Matire Te Horowai lived in the East Cape of the North Island in the late 19th century – an era of heavy Europeanisation where there was severe juxtapositions of indigenous and colonising cultures, yet intermarriage managed to occur.

Two New Zealand landscape paintings featuring waka (canoes) to be exhibited in Christchurch

After my ‘Good as Goldie‘ portrait was snapped up the first day it arrived at Bryce Gallery in Christchurch last month, the next two paintings are finally arriving today.

They are two serene landscape paintings with waka (canoes), both inspired by Maori voyaging legends.

Calling all you Cantabrians!

Head along to Bryce Gallery and check them out. In person you will be able to appreciate the smoothness of the paintwork and the level of detail that has gone into the native huia birds and intricately carved waka prows.

'Toia mai te waka' by Sofia Minson, 2011, oil on canvas, 550 x 1500mm, $9,000
