New Landscape Oil Painting "Aoraki" by Sofia Minson

This new oil painting "Aoraki" measures just over 2 metres high x 1 metre wide. The snow-covered Mt Cook scene was inspired by the land, myths and history of Aotearoa.

Aoraki stands as a quiet giant with glacial-fed Lake Pukaki in the foreground.

White Mt Cook lilies peek out from the hills of tussock grass and are towered over by a surreal native forest. On closer inspection the forest's inhabitants are tiny huia birds perched high in branches and soaring pouakai (haast) eagles.

Both of these native bird species are now extinct therefore this painting is a window into an enchanting, primordial world where Aotearoa is still young and the mountains, lakes and birds have only just emerged from the mists of creation.

"Aoraki" and another one of my new paintings "Mackenzie in Gold" can be viewed from 19th August 2015 for two weeks at BRYCE GALLERY, cnr Riccarton Rd and Paeroa St, Christchurch.
